The Amica Insurance Iron Horse Half Marathon is a scenic, relatively flat course in small town Connecticut. It is everything a runner could hope for in a New England race, and wonderfully positioned on the calendar in early June, and includes a 10K, 5K and kids’ races so everyone can get in on the exciting action.

If you’re feeling up to the name Iron Horse you can choose to run the half marathon and prove to your friends and family just how strong you are. If you want to take it a little “easier” (relative term) and your idea of fun is to have a little more time to horse around at the post race party, then choose between the 10K or 5K. And everyone can watch the kids run too.

If the weather turns out to be warm for this first weekend in June, then all the better. All entrants will receive a moisture wicking shirt at packet pickup. According to race officials, “no cotton will be issued.” Hartford Marathon Foundation events are as “green” as any in the USA.

The races start nice and early so the finishes will be nice and early too. The schedule begins with a 7:30 a.m. start for the 10K and 7:45 start for both the half and the 5K. The top three male and female finishers in each category will receive an award.

Amica Inspires
This race truly has something for everyone, and not just runners. It begins with the Amica Inspiration Station. It allows families, friends and athletes to create a poster with words of encouragement for the runners. It’s a small gesture that can help each runner in a very big way.

“Our race is all about a great course and great amenities,” says Race Director and President Beth Shluger. “Our volunteers and our sponsors have worked hard to make this race a success, and every year they try find things to improve upon to make sure every runner wants to come back year after year.”

Of Course, a Great Race is About the Course
The two-loop course begins and ends on Iron Horse Boulevard in Simsbury, Connecticut. The course is relatively flat with no major hills. Yes, that’s right, a great race to ease you into the summer running season. The route follows the Farmington River on country roads and uses portions of the lovely paved bike path. Roads include Drake Hill, Riverside, Terry’s Plain, Quarry Road, Route 315--all rural--and of course famous and historic Iron Horse Boulevard.

The Fun Continues at the Finish
Even after your beautiful run, with that awesome sense of accomplishment that comes with meeting that challenge, you will realize that the real fun continues after crossing your finish line. Post race activities include great food, music and award presentations upon arrival at the finish area. The band shell at Simsbury Meadows will be host to live entertainment by Gene Donaldson and the Stingrays.

Rock and Blues will be the backdrop as runners are invited to enjoy culinary delights including bratwurst, hot dogs and burgers on the grill at the Simsbury Boy Scouts’ food tent—a true community event.

Kidding Around, and They Love It
There’s a Kid’s Fun Run for kids 2 - 11. The youngest of the running population can choose from distances of 50 yards, 1/4 mile, and 1 mile. The $10 entry fee includes a T-shirt and finisher medal for every child. Register on-line or race day.

The Amica Insurance Iron Horse Half Marathon was selected as one of “Bart’s Best Races” in Runner’s World as selected by Bart Yasso. Come experience why it is simply one of the best around.

Runners will find no greener running pastures than the country setting of this great event. Visit www.hartfordmarathon.com/foundationnew/hmevents/ironhorse for registration and all race details.
