Warm temperatures and sunny skies drew forty-four runners to the 50th Quarterdeck Five miler on Friday. Speedster Jim Frame of West Falmouth recorded a personal best of 27:42 to take second place. Mashpee's Scott Ghelfi, running his first QD5 since the fall, finished in third place by beating his prior best by nearly two minutes. John Evans and Tim Jones rounded out the top five for the men's field.
East Falmouth's Nancy Correia continued to dominate the women's field and set a new personal record of 33:47. Correia said that this week's improvement was attributable to the timely hydration provided by Nathaniel Haycock and his dad at their Elm Road water stop. Sarah Correia and Mary Olenick also posted personal bests to take second and third. Five other women broke the forty minute barrier, making it the fastest women's field of the 1998 season.
Another exciting race occurred in the middle of the pack. The husband-wife combo of Dave and Paula Fratantoni battled it out with running partners Dave Ford and Steve Jayne. The pairs traded the lead several times over the first four miles. But as the race neared Walker Street, Ford and Jayne pulled away from the Fratantoni's by hammering away a sub 7:30 last mile. Of special note was the continuing streak of Courtney and Carolyn Bird who ran their 50th consecutive QD5.
The QD 5 Milers are held every Friday evening at 5:30, beginning at the Town Hall Square in Falmouth. The course is accurately measured, relatively traffic free, and scenic. All turns and miles on the course are marked. The run is free and self-timed. After the run, runners record their times in the Quarterdeck.
