The Summer Sizzler series continued with race #11 tonight with the 8000 meter run through Forest Park and the surrounding communities. Temperatures were warm at the start but it was the high humidity that was weighing on people’s minds. Twenty-seven runners decided to fight through the thick air and race to Sizzler glory.
As the opening bell rang out through the park GSH’s Cameron Cook surged off the start line and took control early and with authority. Cameron would go unchallenged the entire distance, winning the race in 29:07, a full 5 minutes clear of the chase pack. The win was Cameron’s 1st of the season and 6th of his career. Second place overall went to Mark Erwin in 34:09 followed close behind by Alex White in 34:13. Age group winners were Cameron in the Youth (0-19) division, Mark Barile’s 35:29 earned him first in the Open (20-39) division, Mark Miller was first Master (40-49) in 38:33, SMAC’s Phil Bricker was first Senior (50-59) in 38:42, GSH’s Randy Sujat won the Veteran’s (60-69) division in 42:21 and EORC’s Dan Lyner rounded out the age group winner, finishing in 51:46 and tops in the 70+ division.
In the women’s field it would be GSH’s Julie Carroll cranking out another Sizzler victory. Julie completed the course with a time of 37:25. The win was Julie’s 5th of the season and 13th of her career. Second female honors went to GSH’s Kathy McCarthy with a time of 39:09 followed GSH’s Kiana Eaton in 40:39. Female age group winners were Julie in the Youth division, Maura Feeney’s 44:21 earner her first Open female, and Kathy was the top female Veteran runner.
Volunteers for the evening were Brian Goddu, Ed Carroll, Brian McCarthy and Bruce Kurtz. Thanks to all the runners, volunteers and spectators. Please join us again next week for race #12, the 5K cross-country race. This will provide a great tune-up for anyone preparing for a July 4th race.
