Tonight was race #10 in the Summer Sizzler series, the half-way point in the 20 race season. Does that mean summer is half over?!? Conditions couldn’t have been better with sunny skies, temps in the mid-70’s and low humidity. Thirty-four runners lined up to test their abilities on the 5000 meter cross-country course.
Pre-race instructions were brief due in order to make sure everyone could get home in plenty of time to watch the Bruins tonight. A trio of special guests; Gianna & Mackenzie Boyle and Julia Lescarbeau, rang the starters bell to signal the start of the race.
Right from the start it was GSH’s Cameron Cook and Brandon Mulligan leading the field towards the trails, followed closely by Daniel Krasemann. After battling for position for most of the race it would be Brandon taking the lead for good, crossing the finish line in 18:11 for the victory. It was Brandon’s first career Sizzler victory, earning him a place in the Sizzler Hall of Fame. Cameron finished in second place just 9 seconds behind in 18:20 with GSH’s Daniel Krasemann taking the final podium spot in 19:57. Daniel’s time was an age 12 record, shavinf 55 seconds off the previous record set earlier this season by GSH’s Bill Carroll. Male age group winners for the night were Cameron in the Youth (0-19) division, Brandon won the Open (20-39) division, Jim Mulligan was first Master (40-49) with a time of 20:37, GSH’s Richard Clark was first Senior (50-59) in 23:06 and GSH’s Set Roberts won a stacked Veteran (60-69) division with a time of 25:32.
The women’s race would also see a first-time winner tonight. After many close calls, GSH’s Kiana Eaton finally broke through with a victory, finishing the race in 24:30. She will now be forever listed in the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame. Second place female honors went to Janet Aronson in 24:40 and GSH’s Kathy McCarthy finished on the podium with a time of 24:53. Female age group awards went to Kiana in the Youth division, Katie Hakanson-Stacy was first Open female in 27:45, Janet was first Master, Kathy was first Senior and SS’s Vicki Quagliaroli finished in 33:30, first in the Veteran division.
A video of the runners early in the race, where you turn off the main road onto the path to the woods, will be posted on the GSH Summer Sizzlers Race Series Facebook page. Volunteers for the evening were Brian Goddu, Ed Carroll, Brian McCarthy, Bruce Kurtz and Becky Lescarbeau. Brian Goddu pulled double-duty as he volunteered and then ran the race. Thanks to all the runners, volunteers and spectators. Please join us again next week for race #11, the 8K road race.
