Race Report: Tonight was the 9th race of the Summer Sizzler series and the return to the 5K XC course. The steady rain that had fallen for the last 24 hours ended early in the day and the skies finally cleared for a beautiful 70F evening of racing on the water-logged course. Gabby Lescarbeau earned the honors of ringing the opening bell and 30 runners eagerly anticipated its chime. After Brian Goddu described the course layout to a throng of noobie’s the bell sounded and the field was on their way.
Leading the field on the opening straight and into the first downhill towards the swamp was Sam Burke followed closelyby a tight chase pack containing Billy Brunton, Brady Sunter, Dave Merkt and Clinton Morse. The women’s field was lead by Kimberly Malmborg, 11-year old Sophia Jacobs-Townsley, Nora Garrity and Laura Pelczarski.
The battle for position heated up as the runners entered the swamp and charged towards the billygoat hill. As the volunteers waited anxiously for the runners to emerge from the woods it would be Sam Burke charging up the finishing hill and breaking the tape for his first career Summer Sizzler victory. Sam’s 19:09 finishing time is currently the fastest winning time to date for the 2012 season. Second place overall and top Open male (20-39 ) went to SS’s Dave Merkt in 2:03. Billy Brunton grabbed the final podium spot right behind Dave in 20:09, good for 3rd place overall. Top Master (40-49) honors belonged to Mark Miller with a time of 24:17. SS’s Clinton Morse grabbed first place in the Senior (5-59) division with an impressive 21:03 and GSH President Pete Stasz’s 41:31 capped a deep Veteran (60-69) division field.
On the women’s side it would be Nora Garrity leading wire-to-wire for her second straight win with a time of 24:37. The win was Nora’s 2nd of the season and 3rd of her Sizzler career. Second overall female (young lady) belonged to Sophia Jacobs-Townsley in 25:22, quite an impressive feat of an 11-year old running the course for her first time. Right behind Sophia was Laura Pelczarski finishing in 25:35, good for 3rd overall and tops in the Open division. Rounding out the scoring in 26:32 was GSH’s Rogina Modestow as top Senior.
Volunteers for the race were Brian Goddu, Brian McCarthy and Lescarbeau Females X3 (Becky, Gabby & Julia). Thanks to all the runners and volunteers for a great race. I hope you all return next week for race #10 in the series, the 8K race.
