The race was run in memory of Mike Hross,
who passed away in April of 2005 after a battle with renal cell carcinoma. Mike was a runner for over 20 years and a participant
in many local 5K road races. Mike ran
just to finish the race and have a good time.
An added bonus for Mike was the great t-shirt collection he had from
running races each summer…in fact he would often run in a race solely because
they were giving out a great shirt!
Mike was a Vietnam Veteran, and he also worked as a police officer in
New York City, Waterville, and Oakland (where he also served as a DARE
officer). He also worked as a Maine
Support Enforcement Officer, an alcohol and drug counselor, a nursing
assistant, and an EMT. He last served
as a Master Sergeant in the Maine Air National Guard and as a member of the 11th
Civil Support Team in Waterville.

people participated in the event, raising over $1,800 to benefit the National
Kidney Foundation of New England, targeting kidney cancer research. Trophies were donated by Yankee Trophy of
Benton, ME. A huge thank you goes out to all who participated and volunteered
to help run the event; in particular:
Mike’s family and friends, Oakland P.D., and the Messalonskee track team
& coaches.
