Runners must be crazy! In the middle of The Heat Wave of 2009, 388 runners
showed up at the 7th Annual Moose On The Loose 10 Mile Trail Race & Relay in
beautiful Mine Falls Park in Nashua, New Hampshire. Temperatures topped out
in the low 90's during the race --- alleviated only slightly by the fact that
most of the course in the park was shaded by 100 foot tall trees.
Props to the 14 race workers who braved not only the intense hear and himidity,
but managed a crowd that was at least 25% larger than expected. In the first 6
years of the Moose On The Loose, the largest crowd was the 254 in 2007 ---
almost topped by the 246 runners who signed up in the last 6 days. 156 of you
signed up in the last 24 hours (including post entries) Wow!!! Our apoligies
go out to those runners who found the last waterstop at 9 miles out of cups
and to those of you who missed out on the 150+ pounds of fresh fruit.
As for the race itself, the heat did not stop former UNH star Lesley Hocking
from breaking the course record. Hocking kept a 6:11 pace to win in 1:10:46,
for a 5+ minute win over Christin Doneski. 50 year old Cathy Merra ran an
amazing 1:06:05 to take 3rd place.
On the men's side, Rich Smith returned to the einner's circle after a 2 year
hiatus.Rich battled Nathan Huppe for the first 2 laps before breaking away for
a 57:20 - 58:20 win. Jason Porter pulled up in 3rd at 59:06.
The Moose On The Loose served as race #5 in the New Hampshire Gran Prix and
the hometown Gate City Striders dominated the race with a 188-128 victory
over the Greater Derry Track. The Granite State Racing Team took 3rd with 76.
After a grueling weekend serving almost 800 runners over 2 races in 2 states,
the 3CRP crew will enjoy an easy time next weekend with just the Loco Moose
Concord 5K on Sunday, followed by the Bad Habit Productions 5K in Boston on
Labor Day. Seeya there...
