PRESS RELEASE 32nd ANNUAL DIXVILLE HALF MARATHON 1/2 MARATHON CONTINUES TO GROW 9/27/08 A record 72 half marathoners, 64 relay runners, and numerous walkers enjoyed peak fall foliage and near perfect fall running weather at the 32nd Annual Dixville Half Marathon on 9/27/2008. All runners competed on a USATF-certified half marathon course starting at the Balsams Panoramic Golf Course in Dixville Notch and winding along scenic Rte. 26 into Colebrook, NH. Events included the individual 1/2 marathon, two/four person relays and a three-mile fun walk. Runners came from Arizona, Kansas, New Jersey, all over New England and Quebec, to compete in what many runners described as one of the most scenic and best organized half marathons in New England. A lively crowd of spectators greeted runners and walkers at the finish line. There was also live bluegrass music provided by the Parker Hill Road Band, food served up by the Kiwanis club and beverages. This year's top male finisher in the individual 1/2 marathon was local legend David Herr, of Canaan VT, with a time of 1:11:51. David, who holds the 1999 course record of 1:08:12, was pushed early in the race by second place male finisher Lou Bregou (1:14:07) but was able to maintain a pace of 5:29 per mile and beat his time from last year by 48 seconds. This was despite competing in the Adirondack Marathon last weekend and a 50 Kilometer Trail race two weeks ago. David Herr also won the Dennis Joos award for the top local male finisher. Nicholas Menzies of Boston Mass held off Jeff Brooks of Colebrook NH in an exciting finish and took 3rd place with a time of 1:16:31. Heather Gracie of New Jersey maintained a pace of 6:34 per mile and crossed the finish line with a time of 1:29:04. Heather, who hopes to be a full time North Country resident soon, is a veteran of the 1996 Olympic Trials with a PR Marathon time of 2:49. She used the race as a “tune up” for the Philadelphia Marathon which she hopes to complete in less than 3 hours. Lil Pearson finished with a time of 1:56:19 and was awarded the Vickie Bunnell award for the top local female finisher. Terri Risinger who has been dealing with a brain tumor held a 10:20 per minute pace and received the Great Guts award. She traveled from Kansas to run with her sister Tina Risinger and finished the 1/2 Marathon course in 2:15:20. In the two-person relays, the first women, Bridget Freudenburger and Julie Giroux of Colebrook, completed the course in a time of 1:58:23. The first men's two person's team was the Coaticook Frogs with a time of 1:24:13. The two-person mixed team winners, Arguin's Army' (Don Arguin and Giselle Arguin McKenzie) finished in 1:47:53. In the four-person relays the first men's team across the finish line was 'The Old Men of the Mountains' (Ron Fedele, Stephen Simon, Scott Ryder and Mark Vincent) with a time of 1:33:40. The “Old Men” were part the North Country team by the same name that just completed the 200 mile Reach the Beach Relay. The first women across the finish line again this year was the 'Sister Act' team, consisting of Gina White, Charlene Poulin, Bridget Jeffers and Darlene Belknap with a time of 1:50:22. The top four person mixed team, with a time of 1:46:37, were 'The Ducklings' runners Amanda Marquis, Katie Voight, Bill and Tommy Moody. Proceeds from the Dixville Races benefit the North Country Community Recreation Center, the Colebrook Ambulance Corps, Colebrook and Canaan Key Clubs, Two Rivers Cancer Fund, and the Dixville Races scholarship for deserving North Country High School graduates. Everyone was encouraged to return next year, and to bring a friend. The 2009 race will be the 33rd anniversary of this event and is scheduled for the usual last Saturday in September (9/26/09). Race organizers promised the same great fall weather.
