2 days of steady rain didn't dampen the spirits of the 141 runners who braved the
weather to tackle thew 2nd Annual Loco Moose Portland 5K Cross Country Race through
Deering Oaks Park in Portland, Maine --- though the RD did briefly think about
staying in the comfortable beds at the local Courtyard Hotel!
The RD arrived at Deering Oaks Park at the crack of dawn to discover bulldozers
blocking the course as they worked to improve the drainage system that usually
keeps the small pond clear and silt-free. The normal 45 minute course marking
job turned into a 75 minute task as the course was re-routed around the construct-
ion site. Thanks to race volunteers Chris and Andrew, race headquarters was ready
to go by the time the first runners arrived at 8:45 AM.
A large post entry crowd increased the field to a 3CRP Portland race record 163
entrants and more than doubled the 2007 field. As always runners were treated to
an accurate, well-marked, and challenging race course --- fitting a 5k into a 50
acre park is quite a challenge. The course featured several up-and-overs where the
runners ran underneath a bridge in one direction - and then back in the opposite
direction on the other side of the creek - and then headed up and over the bridge
with fellow competitors 20 feet below.
Leading the way was 17 year old Max Thomas of Kingswood Regional High School of
Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Max even passed the lead cyclist twice over the first
2.5K loop as the lead cyclist got bogged down in the wet grass. Max's time was a
course record 17:34 and put him almost a minute up on 2nd place Daniel Salvo's
18:20, with 15 year old Ben Schaeffer pulling up in 3rd place in 18:43.
Morgan Burke of Newburgh, Maine led the ladies with a time of 22:59, just 11
seconds ahead of runner up Alyie Doyko. 12 year old Mary Szatkowski placed 3rd
in 23:34 --- a great time given the slow running conditions on the course.
As always for 3CRP race participants, all runners and walkers received a great
schwag bag, a colorful and great looking t-shirts, and a delicious post race
spread of fresh fruit, cinnamon buns, blueberry muffins, peanut butter crackers,
and WHOOPIE PIES! (Note to self - but more whoopie pies for future races.)
Many runners in the field talked about how much fun the race was --- since for
most of them it was the first time running off-road. I encourage all roadies
out there to get out of your comfort zone and try a cross country or trail race.
I am sure you will have a great time and will rethink your race schedule, drop-
ing some of the boring road races for the much more fun challenges that can only
be found in the parks and trails.
