Post run tonight - about midnight....I sat outside the former site of the ole VFW Logan Post in Teele Square w/ Buddy the Beagle both of us munching on a #1 from Kee Kar Lau Chinese Restaurant and I privately reminisced to Buddy about all the great races over the years that took place out of the former VFW Logan Post - which has been demolished so that condominiums could be built - and all the other great road races that have made up the history of Somerville road racing and are now defunct. There was the Coogles 4 Miler and the Bullpen 4 Miler..both used the same course but each started at different locations..the Bullpen 4 Miler out of the current Orleans Bar & Restaurant in Davis Square and the Coogles 4 Miler out of Union Square......there was the Elks Club 4 Miler that was always the kick-off to each new racing season in Somerville and it took place out of the Somerville Elks Club which was formerly at the corner of Highland Ave & Central - now a parking lot for Dunkin Donuts with the copper Elk that used to stand out front, now to be seen from Rt 128 in Wakefield standing out in front of the Wakefield Elks Club....and then here was the St. Paul's 3 Miler which was a favorite of this scribe and it took place from the current site of the Haitian Church on College Ave just outside of Davis Square......and if you are real ole Somerville then one must not forget the granddaddy of all Somerville road races... the "Somerville Road Race" which was held out of Somerville High School on Highland Avenue...the most popular was the famous Powderhouse Pub 4 Miler, the powerhouse of all road races in Somerville in it's day, sometimes having as many as 600 runners & walkers and this was back in the early 90's when Somerville wasn't the hot place it has become for so many!!
I know Mike Manoogian is reading this and saying to himself.."don't forget the Bumps Run, the Jumbo Classic, or Caseys 3 Miler and I won't Mike...there are others that were short lived like the Highlander Mile, Somerville Fire Fighters Five & Dime and the Somerville City Clubber and many that are still happening such as the Dee Zuccaro 5Km, An Ras Mor which had it's roots and some stability out of the now defunct Irish Eyes aka Glandore Pub in Union Square or the Gobble, Gobble,Gobble Run that was actually hatched out of the former Club 3 on Somerville Ave and then enjoyed two years out of the former Genoa Ristorante when things were a lot simpler in Somerville road racing and the Khoury's Summer Steamer which started out as the Khoury's Foot Race in 1992 - who could forget the original tee shirt? - the Steamer is now the oldest active race in the city going on it's 16th year in 2007..if I asked two cats who have been at em' all, Peter Donati or John Grant back in 1992 if they could ever imagine the Khoury's Foot Race being the oldest active race in the city someday..they would say "you are nuts, go get us a beer Paul and just be happy we showed up".Well enough about old stuff, cause today in Somerville road racing continues to be an active and fresh sport..the scene is always evolving with many newcomers participating in a city that is proud of it's running heritage - soon even Mike Amarello will be hosting a race here....
This evening we had a relatively new gal to the local racing scene win - Amy Alsheski of Pymouth,Wisconsin and parts west of Trum Field-Somerville won her second Thursday Nighter...and she told me, Matzi Neuber and Meaghan Wahl over a few tasty pints of Harpoon that she aims to win another before the end of the year!!! **Amy A. can be seen above cuddling with her most recent Friday night date, Big Sammy the Bulldog:>)
The Kee Kar Lau 5.15Km aka D.A.V. Somerville 5.15Km is held each Thursday and all that have a thirst for running and a personality that allows em' to stay out past 8:30 PM are welcome:>)
