Fred may be gone, but his ideas live on

There was a nice crowd in attendance to honor the legendary Fred Brown. Having organized more than 4000 races during his lifetime, Brown, who passed away in 1992, was the founder of the North Medford Club and founder of the Lake Winnipesaukee Relay that is now named in his honor.

Many of the sport's amenities enjoyed today did not exist when Fred was pioneering the sport. It was a simpler time before the existance of GPS devices, iPods, chip timing, age group awards and the Internet. A typical Fred Brown event would have a course that was most likely measured with a car odometer, had few if any mile markers, a water stop if you were lucky, race results that took hours to compile, and recycled awards that Fred dug out of his car's trunk. It may have been a simpler time, but it was also a good time.
The first Fred Brown race I ran was at Shed Park in Lowell in the early seventies. It was a handicap race. The way it worked was the slowest runner, based on previous races, left the starting line first. Fred would then send off the other runners based on their handicap time. For example, over a five mile course a 7-minute per mile runner would get a 5-minute head start over a 6-minute per mile runner. Theoretically if the race handicapper did his job well, everyone would finish at approximately the same time. Of course it never turn out that way, but it did make the race interesting and fun.
At the Good Times Series we've taken Fred's handicap event and put a technological twist to it. Handicap times were calculated using each runner's best series' time and then deducting the best time run on the course this season. So if you're a male and your best time was 20:00 we deducted 15:18 (best male time run this season) from your time to calculate a handicap time of 4:42. This handicap time was then deducted from your finishing time. The same was done for all women runners base on the best women's time run this season. The Good Times super computers then did all the intricate calculations to determine the results. Got it?
Benjamin Ndaya continued his dominance by winning his sixth consecutive series' race. Framingham's Camille Murphy won the women's division in an outstanding 19:30. This moved Camille into the number two spot behind Kara Haas in the all-time PR rankings list. She will be competing on the Framingham HS cross country team this fall.
In our handicap race our top three males were Tom Springford (Dracut), Alex Macina (Nashua) and Brian Weilbrenner (Dunstable). Our top three female handicap finishers were Maureen Bouzan (Lowell), Elizabeth Hauck (Framingham) and Diana Collins (Tyngsboro). Our top three women did not receive their awards due to a senior moment by the race director, we'll make sure this is fixed next week.
Speaking of next week, we
will be having our Classic T-Shirt 5K. So dig into your closet and dust of that
favorite t-shirt and show it to the world. We'll have special awards for oldest
shirt, most unusual shirt, shirt from a race the furthest away and a few other
categories. We'll also have standard age division awards and our weekly raffle.
And, as always, "We can't promise you will run a fast time, but we do
guarantee you will have a Good Time!"
