Super Mario...not another runner even close!!
Fun night down at the
"Greyhound Pub" tonight. Lots of new faces, but no challengers for the
cash prize so "Super Mario" remains super. Only he now has an extra
$125.00 in his pocket. Pretty easy run for Mario coming of Sundays well
deserved victory at Doyle's five miler in JP. Mario Fraioli is
certainly a name we'll be hearing for some time to come on the New England
running scene.
Speaking of fast runners
that cool breeze blowing by me at about 2 miles was none other than Sarah Joyce,
tonight's first woman finisher and fourth overall. One week after finishing the
Boston Marathon in 3:12:45 Sarah was flying again. The same could not be said
for her hubby John who takes the dubious honor of first "DNF" on our
course. The word is Johns running partner for the night, I didn't catch
her name but she has four legs and mucho fur, wanted to catch Mario's victory
rather than tour the mean streets of Worcester.
Tracy Flynn prevailed
in the best cookie category snatching up some tickets for an upcoming New
England revolution game. Tickets were provided by Glenn O'Connor, massage
therapist for the Revolution and owner of Heartbreak Hill Massage. This
victory was not without protest however. Sue Leo-Johnson, (who happens to have
the only hyphenated name in the Main South section of Worcester which shows the
up and comingness of the neighborhood) was overheard declaring her brownies were
better than any cookie Tracy could ever bake and the fix was in. Ok maybe she didn't exactly say that but we all know she was thinking it!
This has all
the makings of a hard core bakeoff, Betty Crocker style. Keep an eye out for
it.
Also on hand tonight was Lt
John Franco of the Worcester Fire Department. John was recruiting runners
for the 8th annual Firefighters Memorial 6K . The race is Sunday
June 10th at institute park. A favorite of many runners and an annual
tradition held to honor fallen firefighters and to raise money for local
charities. If you are reading this you are probably a runner so why not come out
and participate knowing that more than $175,000.00 has
been donated to charities over the last seven
years.
Finally a special hanks to
"Fast Pace Timing" who came out from Somerville to time tonight's race.
Coming up next
week....every runner who finishes the race will be entered in a drawing for
Red Sox tickets. No entry fee, no small print, no strings attached.
Just show up and race and you may walk away with the prize.
