| The Start of the 2002 Seagull Six
Ken Gartner, and Jessica Baker, both of Falmouth, won their respective divisions in the 25th annual edition of the Seagull Six 5.74 mile road race.
The still spry 41-year-old Gartner put away his younger competitors in a time of 31:16 on the hilly loop course that starts and ends in front of the Captain Kidd Restaurant in Woods Hole. Mike Norton of Waquoit and Geoff Newton of Brewster pushed Gartner from the start. But Gartner's experience and knowledge of the course enabled him to surge at the right time, and his challengers did not respond. In the women's race, Jessica Baker, who recently returned to Falmouth from her native California, outran the women's field in a time of 39:58. Her nearest competitors, Heidi Clark of Woods Hole and first master woman Susan Lowry of Sandwich finished more than a minute behind. In the age groups, Julia Nix of Waltham was the first high school girl, Steve Hamel of Falmouth and Kris Tholke of West Falmouth placed first in the men's and women's senior divisions respectively, and the husband and wife team of Mike Mullo and Elizabeth Jazowski were the top veterans. There were 122 finishers in this year's Seagull Six. The race has been annually staged by the Falmouth Track Club since 1978, and the race was again sponsored by Falmouth Podiatry and Falmouth Physical Therapy. A 2.5 mile non-competitive walk was held in conjunction with the event to raise money for women's health programs in Falmouth.
