Set against a backdrop of heavy rain, thunder, lightning and tornado warnings, it appeared shortly before the scheduled 8:00AM start that RTW #43 might be a two-person race. With 20 minutes remaining prior to the start, only one runner had materialized. Consequently, the race director was preparing to dust off his running shoes in order to make it a race.

The dust remained in place, however, as a group of last minute arrivals found their way to the race. Included in that group was RTW regular Ann Leoni of The Woodlands. Ann had driven 40+ miles from The Woodlands to the Galleria area of Houston in order run the Komen Houston Race for the Cure only to find that the race had been cancelled. It was not cancelled because of the weather, but rather due to a major fire in the area which, sadly, claimed two lives, including that of a Houston firefighter. Upon learning of the cancellation, Ann drove back to The Woodlands and made it just in time for the start of the RTW 5K.

Among the finishers was Jim Yeomans of Houston who took a wrong turn about a half-mile into the race. He made his way back to the start and began the race anew. Despite the double start and having to run on his own, Jim's 20:32 was good enough for a fourth-place finish.

Even with the rain, conditions - other than the water hazard pictured above and several slippery spots - weren't bad. By the start of the race, the thunder and lightning had ceased and most of the "heavy" weather was well to the south. The temperature was in the low 60's.

A reminder that the next RTW 5K is scheduled for Saturday, October 27th. The entry fee is $1.00 (yes, one dollar).
