Winner of Avon Global Championship Sweeps the Competition

Sacramento, Calif. -- (June 19, 1999) -- Excellent weather and a beautiful and well-managed race coarse made Avon Running - Sacramento's 10k run and 5k walk and fun run a rewarding experience for more than 1,500 women.

Women of ages and abilities joined together to celebrate women's health and fitness. Many were experienced runners who came from as far as Thailand to participate in Avon's competition; others were women who run and exercise regularly; and for others, it was their first fitness event.

Forty-four year old Jane Welzel of Fort Collins, Colorado, won the 10k in 36:20 followed by Jen Schindler, 19, of Shingle Springs, who finished in 36:45. Midori Sperandeo, 32, of Fair Oaks came in third with 37:26 and Kathy Ward, 44, of Carmichael followed in fourth place with 39:21.

Welzel won Avon Running's National Championship in Chicago last November in the master's division (age 40 and over). Less than one month ago, she finished second in Avon's Global Championship in New York City in the master's division. She came to Sacramento, not to win the master's division, but to win the race entirely. And she did just that.

One participant ran the 10k in Avon Running - Sacramento last year as well as in Avon Running - Bangkok. She ran in Sacramento again today and says she will run in Avon Running - Bangkok in October of this year.

Eighty-year-old Martha Barszcz was glad to participate in her first 5k as were the hundreds of other women who had never experienced the spirit of encouragement, accomplishment and competition.

Avon Running - Sacramento is part of the Avon Running Global Women's Circuit, a series of runs, walks, fun runs and beginning workshops held in 11 cities throughout the United States and 12 countries throughout the world.
