Kansas City, Mo. (Oct. 3, 1999) -- More than 1,200 women showed their commitment to health and fitness today as they competed in the Avon Running - Global Women's Circuit, Kansas City event. Forty percent of the women were first time participants. The 10K Run and 5K Walk/Fun Run were held Sunday morning at Mill Creek Park on the Country Club Plaza.
Cori Mooney of Omaha, Neb., crossed the 10K finish line first with a time of 35 minutes, 42 seconds. Beverly Thomas, Kansas City, Mo., won the masters division (40 and over) with a time of 38 minutes, 19 seconds.
The first Avon representative to finish the 10K was Karen Pelton, Topeka, Kan., with a time of 41 minutes, 27 seconds.
All three earned their way to compete in the Avon Running - Global Women's Circuit National Championship in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 31.
The 5K winner was Alicia Elmore, Kansas City, Mo., with a time of 21 minutes, 32 seconds.
"We had girls from 8 years old to women in their 70s," said Bill Glauz, race director. "And everyone's a winner."
"Avon Running gets many woman to the starting line for the first time. It's exciting to see that happening," said Kathrine Switzer, Program Director for Avon Running - Global Women's Circuit. Switzer was in Kansas City to welcome all the participants and she ran the 10K, finishing with a time of 51 minutes, 42 seconds.
From 1978 to 1985, the Avon Running program focused on getting the women's marathon into the Olympic games. In its renewed commitment, Avon now focuses on making fitness a priority in every woman's life and creating opportunities for emerging talent.
