Race Report Sunday October 4, 1998

More than 1,200 women showed their commitment to health and fitness today as they competed in the Avon Running - Kansas City event, one stop in the Avon Running - Global Women's Circuit. The 10K Run and 5K Fitness Walk were held Sunday morning at Mill Creek Park on the Country Club Plaza.

Suzanne Castruita of Omaha, Neb., crossed the 10K finish line first with a time of 35 minutes, 23 seconds. Catriona Dowling of Boulder, Col., won the masters division (40 and over) with a time of 37 minutes, 17 seconds. The first Avon representative to finish the 10K was Karen Pelton, Topeka, Kan., with a time of 42 minutes, 27 seconds.

All three earned their expense-paid trip to compete in the Avon Running - US National Championship in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 8.

The first 5K finisher was Rosaline Munoz, Kansas City, Mo., with a time of 23 minutes, 28 seconds. Shannon Morrisey, Overland Park, Kan., won the wheelchair division with a time of 32 minutes, 22 seconds.

"Every woman that participated today is a winner," said Bill Glauz, race director. "Some were here to compete and others were here to complete a personal goal. Avon Running salutes all women who have made fitness a priority."

From 1978 to 1985, the Avon Running program focused on getting the women's marathon into the Olympic games. In its renewed commitment, Avon now focuses on making fitness a priority in every woman's life and creating opportunities for emerging talent.
