Despite Back Injury Briggs-Latham Notches Avon Running - Hartford Win

HARTFORD (CT.)---Jennifer Briggs-Latham, a 30 year-old running magazine advertising coordinator from Croton-On-Hudson (N.Y.), fought off a nagging back injury eased by yoga exercise to win the Avon Running - Hartford 10K Run on Saturday, July 10. She led the field from the start to her 37:35 finish.

About 1,200 East Coast women ran or walked from Saint Joseph College to the finish line at Elizabeth Park's Rose Garden on a morning described by runner Laura Wolcott of Glastonbury (CT.) as "the perfect morning to run-overcast and cool".

Briggs-Latham, who has been running for 19 years, works at Running Times Magazine. Second place went to Michelle LaFleur (38:10) of Memphis, (NY), while Lauri Bartnicki (38:41) of Middletown (CT.) took third place.

First Master winner (age 40 and over) was Tina Heimdal (42:06) of Glastonbury, CT. First Avon Products Representative winner was Barbara Maloney (49:06) of Tolland (CT.).

Expense-paid trips to the October 31 (1999) Avon Running National 10K Championship in Cincinnati (OH.) were won by Briggs-Latham, First Master Winner Heimdal and Top Avon Representative Maloney.

First: Mary Haines (1:38:35) of Newington (CT) who described her run as a "piece of cake" which drew a standing ovation from the other runners during the awards ceremony. She ran with her daughter Mary Beth Home of Massachusetts

Open Team Winners
