All American 23 Year-Old Wins

1st Avon Running - Hartford 10K

HARTFORD (CT)-Maribel Sanchez , 23, of Lebanon (NH), a four time all-American and high school track coach, won the first Avon Running - Hartford 10K Run Saturday (July 11) with a time of 35 minutes and 13 seconds.

She led the field from the starting line and was greeted by marathon greats Grete Waitz and Kathrine Switzer while 1300 women ranging in ages from 6 to 83 crossed the finish line. She thanked the fans who encouraged her along the shady residential course.

Sue Faber, 35, of Oxford, CT (35:52) took second place and Sandra Branney, 44, of Glasgow, Scotland (36:53) took third and the master's title. The course is USATF certified.

Sanchez, a native of Ossining (NY), moved to New Hampshire following her graduation from Dartmouth College. She and other category winners won an expense-paid trip to compete in the Avon Running Global Women's Circuit National Championships November 8 in Chicago.

All women who completed the 10K Run or 5K Fitness Walk received a medal courtesy of AVON Products, Inc., sponsor of the event.

Proceeds from the race benefit community fitness programs of the Hartford Track Club and $1.00 of each entry fee is donated to the "Roads Scholar" Program, which creates a travel and training fund for deserving, developing runners by the Road Runners Club of America.
