Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, killing more than all the cancers combined. Yet 1/3 of those deaths can be prevented by simple exercise. Join us in beating heart disease! A portion of each race entry and other contributions will support St. Joseph's Women's Hospital in conjunction with St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute. It takes more than love to keep a healthy heart! Did you know that…
According to the Department of Health & Human Services, cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death among women (more than all cancers combined!).
Up to one third of deaths due to cardiovascular disease are preventable through diet and exercise.
Studies show that regular running and walking can substantially reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. As little as 30 minutes, three times a week achieve significant health benefits.

Kathrine Switzer, Program Director of Avon Running Global Women's Circuit, a unique series of international women-only 10K races and 5K walks, offers simple tips to keep a healthy heart, build self-esteem and boost your confidence, year-round:

Make exercise a priority. Aim for 30 minutes a day, five times a week. But remember that even 10 minutes is better than no minutes.
Mom was right! Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and cut down saturated fats.
Walk or exercise with a partner-it's fun and keeps you motivated.
Spice up your walking/running program by incorporating a variety of activities. Remember…exercising should be fun and increasingly challenging!
Don't smoke. It's a killer in every way.
Women who are post menopausal or over age 50, and men over age 40, should consult their physician before beginning an exercise program.
See your doctor for an annual checkup. You only have one heart…don't break it!
