Gordon Bakoulis is a writer, editor, competitive runner, coach and public speaker based in New York City. She was the editor-in-chief of Running Times magazine from January 1997 through May 2000 and is now a senior writer for that publication. Gordon has been the health editor of Woman's Day and the managing editor of Fitness Swimmer, and held editorial positions at New York Runner, Health, Working Woman, Glamour and Ms. As a freelance writer, Gordon's credits include Elle, Fitness, New Woman, New York Runner, The New York Times, Parenting, Runner's World and Women's Sports + Fitness, and she edited the 2000 New York City Marathon Media Guide.
Gordon is the author of two books, Cross-Training and How to Train for and Run Your Best Marathon, both published by Fireside, and the co-author of Coping With Endometriosis, published by Prentice Hall Press. She has also written Getting Real About Running, to be published by Ballantine in early 2002. She co-edited The Running Times Guide to Breakthrough Running, published by Human Kinetics in May 2000. In addition, she was a contributing writer to The Good Health Fact Book and Live Longer, Live Better, both published by Reader's Digest Books.
Gordon has competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials four times (1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000) and was a finalist in the 1992 U.S. Olympic 10,000-meter Trials. She represented the United States at the 1989 World Cup Marathon, the 1991 World Championship Marathon and the 1992 World Championship Half Marathon. Gordon's marathon best is 2:33:01, and she has completed 13 sub-2:40 marathons. Her half-marathon best is 1:11:34 and she has a 10K best of 32:45. Gordon is a seven-time winner of the New York Road Runners Club's Fred Lebow Runner of the Year award and has twice placed among the top 10 finishers in the New York City Marathon. Since turning 40 in February 2001, she has placed second in the masters division of the 2001 Boston Marathon, and won the masters division of numerous other races.
A member of Moving Comfort Racing Team, a national team of elite women runners, Gordon is also the founding coach of the women's team Moving Comfort New York. She has coached runners of all levels, both individually and in group settings, through Personal Best Coaching in New York City, Craftsbury Running Camp and Maine Running Camp. Gordon speaks frequently to runners and other audiences on running, fitness, health and related topics.
Gordon lives on Manhattan's Upper West Side with her husband, Alan Ruben, and their sons, Joseph (born July 1997) and Samuel (born September 1999).
